"Search for Birthmother"

•Subject: Search for Birthmother •Author: Ketreen Kaesling •Date: 16/3/2000

I have not been able to find information concerning the rights of adoptees to receive information on the adoption and information of the parents. What is allowed and not allowed? I was adopted in Germany in 1957 by a military family and naturalized as a US citizen. any info would be helpful

Under the present German law (§§ 61, 62 Personenstandsgesetz), an adoptee has the right to be informed about his or her natural parents. You should write to the registry (Standesamt) at the place where you were born. They are also in a position to tell you how much information they can provide. If you can write in German, this is likely to help and speed up matters. I presume that you were adopted under German law at the time.
